The following photographs show the pit saw in use.
Setting the teeth proved to be a challenging job.
Of course, no one is alive today who had first hand experience.
It took several attempts to get the offset and tooth angle correctly set.

Rob Tirrell, left, Dr. Robert Hart, center, and Ed Welch, right.
The three of us are marking up a log to be sawed. A pit saw required the power of two men. The man on top had the responsibility of guiding the saw blade along a scored line. The top man also had the responsibility of lifting the saw back up.
The job of the pit man was to pull the saw down. The pit man positioned required someone with a lot of strength. Basically, this person did most of the work.

Rob Tirrell is giving the teeth of the pit saw a final inspection.

A pit saw blade is long and difficult to handle. One must take care not to get too close to the sharp teeth. Dr. Bob Hart is helping to put the saw in place for the first cut.
