Shipyard Pit Saw

Pit saws were used in Colonial America before water powered sawmills became popular. After the introduction of the sawmill, pit saws used in lumber yards tended to be in areas that were located away from populated areas. Pit saws used to cut boards tended to have thick wide blades. The New England ship building industry used pit saws with narrow, thin, flexible blades to cut lumber used in ship building. In a ship yard, the pit saw was used similar to today's skillsaws. This saw blade came from the Belfast area. The saw measures 79 inches.
