Pewter Nursing Bottle

Stock Number 2251-29

Pewter nursing bottles date from the early 1700s to around 1790. When it was discovered that the lactic acid in milk dissolved some of the pewter and then digested by the child, an attempt was made to collect and destroy all pewter nursing bottles. In Europe the nickname of such bottles is "murder bottles" due to the number of infant deaths related to them. Surviving examples tend to be found in the USA and in other former British colonies.
