These horseshoe shaped cleats were nailed to the heals of laborers who harvested ice on lakes and rivers. The surface of the ice was constantly wet with water as blocks of ice were pulled from the water. Ice cleats prevented injury from falling. This pair of cleats has seen many years of use. They were made by A.F. Cox & Son of Portland, Maine. They are in excellent condition because they have been well cared for.
