Before the invention of the match, fires were started with a burning glass or a tinder box that contained flint and a striking tool. Fire starting tools carried on the person were small and usually fit into a small steel box. These boxes "tinder boxes" contained a striking steel, flint and charred linen. Fire starting equipment used around the home was much larger and often more decorative. I usually have several fire steels and tinder boxes in stock.
