2067-03 . . . Birthing Doll, circa 1850 . . . . The best-preserved birthing doll that I have seen, including those in museums. The photos speak for themselves. I have much information on this birthing doll.
William Smellie (1697-1763) specialized in breech births and gave midwife classes to both men and women. Because of legal restrictions, he invented an artificial pelvis with artificial babies to use in his classes. Smellie's pelvis machine and one of his birthing dolls can be seen at the British Museum of Science in London. There is an entire chapter devoted to this subject in the book "Antique Medical Instruments" by Elisabeth Bennion. The book is a Sotheby's Publication.
